adoption

As an adoptive parent with two children with special needs, he understands the issues that face parents and children in foster care. He focuses on attachment and behavioral-based treatment modalities including Trust Based Relationship Intervention (TBRI). He can help your child process those big emotions regarding loss and the challenges of adjusting to a new home. Attachment building exercises between parent and child can be incorporated into the children. Sometimes children in foster care simply need a safe person who understands. Dr. Adams is in the process of writing a book called Trauma-Informed Foster and Adoptive Praenting

In working with children who have been victims of trauma, Dr. Adams uses trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy and play based child therapy. Trauma-focused behavioral therapy is a scientifically-proven treatment that teaches coping strategies, helps children to identify emotional responses, and encourages children to understand the connections between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Dr. Adams provides a safe environment where children can explore their traumatic experiences either verbally or through writing or play.

DEPRESSION, ANXIETY, & ANGER

Dr. Adams can help your child learn to identify the connections between his or her thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. He desires to help your child identify their depression, anxiety, and anger, and he then will teach your child to develop strategies to cope with the challenges of life.

ATTENTION-DEFICIT HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER/

It can be very challenging to raise a child with ADHD. Dr. Adams enjoys working with children with ADHD, and he focuses on skill building activities and games and role playing. He also enjoys helping families to develop behavior plans at home and/or school.

CONDUCT PROBLEMS

As a behavior analyst, Dr. Adams helps teach children to replace maladaptive behaviors (tantrums, aggression, noncompliance, etc.) with more appropriate behaviors such as self-calming techniques. He also engages parents to help develop some proactive and reactive strategies to respond to maladaptive behavior through behaviorally-based programs. He uses applied behavior analysis to help children with oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and other maladaptive behavior problems.
